San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo Mission Carmel California
I had spent the afternoon at Mission Carmel specifically for this photograph. Everything was perfect - the bougenvilleas were charming, and I loved the water coming down the stairs. The light however was not cooperating - it was far too contrasty, and I was getting very concerned I might not be able to make this image while the flowers were better than I had ever seen them. My salvation came when one of the Mission directors agreed to let me stay for an hour after sundown. As if on cue, 15 minutes after everyone had gone, I was alone in the courtyard, and marine layer fog began obscuring the sun, creating perfectly flat light. I reveled at being alone in the old courtyard with a composition I have been after for years. Photo © copyright by Michael Ambrose.
